SMART CONTROLLER
INSTALLATION
A smart controller adjusts your watering to the weather, skips cycles when it rains and lets you run or pause zones from your phone. We install it, connect your zones and sensors, and set up each zone properly so the controller actually waters smarter instead of just differently.
WHAT MAKES A CONTROLLER "SMART"
A traditional controller runs the same schedule until someone changes it. A smart controller connects to Wi-Fi and uses local weather data, and on some models an on-site sensor, to adjust how often and how long each zone runs. It can skip a cycle before a forecast storm, shorten run times in cooler weather and add water during a heat wave.
The other big advantage is control. From an app, you can run a zone to test it, pause watering while guests are over, check what ran last night and make seasonal changes without standing in the garage reading a manual. Many models also send alerts when something looks wrong, like a zone drawing unusual current.
But a smart controller is only as smart as its setup. It needs to know what each zone waters (turf, shrubs, trees or drip), the type of heads, the soil, the slope and the amount of sun. Skipping that setup is the most common reason people are disappointed with smart controllers.
We're brand-neutral on smart controllers. Several manufacturers make good models, and the right choice depends on your zone count, whether you want an on-site sensor, how you like to use apps and whether you want the controller mounted indoors or out.
A Smart Controller May Be Right If You
- Forget to adjust the schedule when the seasons change
- See the sprinklers running in the rain
- Want to run or pause zones from your phone
- Travel often and want to check the system remotely
- Have an old controller that needs replacing anyway
- Deal with runoff on clay soil or slopes
- Want watering to follow local restrictions reliably
- Want a record of what ran and when
HOW WE INSTALL SMART CONTROLLERS
A careful install and setup is what separates a smart controller that saves water from one that just looks modern.
Check the System First
We run every zone to make sure valves, wiring and heads work. A smart controller can't fix a broken system, so we identify any repairs before the upgrade.
Confirm Wi-Fi & Location
We check the mounting location for power and a reliable Wi-Fi signal. Weak signal in the garage or on an exterior wall is a common issue we plan around.
Mount & Wire
We remove the old controller, mount the new one and move each station wire, labeling zones clearly. Sensors and master valves are connected where present.
Connect & Configure
We connect the controller to your Wi-Fi and account, set your location and link it to weather data.
Set Up Each Zone
Each zone is set up with its plant type, head type, soil and sun exposure so the controller calculates sensible run times. We add cycle-and-soak where runoff is likely.
Test & Show You the App
We run each zone from the app, confirm the schedule follows local watering rules and show you how to make common changes.
SMART CONTROLLER FEATURES WE SET UP
Most smart controllers offer similar core features. These are the ones that make the biggest difference.
Weather-Based Adjustment
Run times adjust to temperature, rainfall and seasonal conditions using local weather data, so the schedule doesn't stay stuck on summer settings.
Rain & Freeze Skips
Cycles skip automatically for rain and freezing temperatures. A wired sensor can add on-site accuracy. See rain & freeze sensors.
App Control
Run, pause and test zones from your phone. Handy for troubleshooting, mowing days and checking the system while you're away.
Watering Day Rules
Set allowed watering days and times so the controller follows your city's restrictions automatically.
Zone Profiles
Each zone gets its own settings for plant type, heads, soil, slope and sun, which is what lets the controller water each area appropriately.
Alerts & History
See what ran and when, and get notified of issues like wiring faults, so small problems get caught early.
A SMART CONTROLLER WORKS BEST ON A HEALTHY SYSTEM
A smart controller decides how much water each zone needs, but it assumes the heads put that water where it belongs. If a head is broken, a nozzle is clogged or spray is hitting the driveway, the controller can't see it. It will keep scheduling water that never reaches the lawn.
That's why we recommend pairing an upgrade with a system audit or at least a zone check. Fixing coverage, leaks and weeping valves first means the controller's calculations match reality. Where runoff is a problem, cycle-and-soak programming helps water soak into clay soil instead of pooling or running into the street.
Smart controllers can also help with local watering rules. Once your allowed watering days are set, the controller works around them automatically, which is easier than remembering to adjust a standard controller when restrictions change.
What We Fix Before or During the Upgrade
- Broken or misaligned heads replaced and adjusted
- Leaks and weeping valves repaired
- Faulty field wiring fixed and labeled
- Sensors connected and tested
- Master valve wired where present
- Drip zones identified and set up correctly
WHAT A SMART CONTROLLER WON'T DO
A smart controller won't fix a poorly designed zone, stop a leak or keep a broken head from spraying the street. It also depends on a stable Wi-Fi connection for weather updates and app control, though most models keep running their last schedule if the connection drops.
It also isn't a set-it-and-forget-it purchase for every yard. New sod, new plantings and shady areas may need manual tweaks for a while. We'll show you where those settings live so you can adjust them easily.
If a smart controller isn't the right fit, a well-programmed standard controller with a rain and freeze sensor is still a solid, reliable option. See controller repair and replacement.
